I found this beautiful little plate at the thrift store and it had to come home with me. About four inches across, even at $1 it was a great deal. When I brought it up to the counter, the cashier remarked at how pretty it was, and said she had only put it out a little bit earlier that day. Score for me!

The design is so colorful and lovely, I had to have it. It’s in perfect condition, too; no dings in the ceramic at all.

It’s made by a Spanish company called MG, as indicated by the marker, but I can’t find any info about the company online. Also, there is a hole drilled in the back for hanging. I’m not sure if it came like that or if someone else did that later. But there seems to be glaze inside the drilled hole, so I think it came that way. Nice idea, but I think I’d rather display it flat rather than on the wall.

Freeform Embroidery

A couple of months ago, I found these adorable, tiny embroidery frames/hangers. I got them from the thrift store for $.30 each. They fulfilled two of my favorite qualifiers: adorably tiny (the blue one being maybe 3 inches wide), and cheap.

This weekend I decided to do something with the blue one. I’ve never really done embroidery before, but I had a hefty amount of DMC floss left over from my friendship bracelet-making days of high school, and free time.

First I thought I would try an embroidery pattern – but I couldn’t find anything I was interested in. And I didn’t have proper embroidery cloth, just a square of muslin. I looked up some common embroidery techniques, and became confused because I am apparently unable to comprehend simple directions. So, I threw caution to the wind and went with some freeform embroidery. I made up my own knot and just did whatever I felt like. And I think it came out okay!

Now I just have to figure out what to do with the red one.

Adventures in Thrifting

Thrift store bargain-hunting is quickly becoming one of my favorite past times. I like to get a lot of practical things, like picture frames, kitchen gadgets, and books. But I also enjoy hunting for that interesting looking vintage find that everyone on Etsy seems so good at finding (and reselling). Only, I’d like to be able to buy those cute vintage things for cheap! Today, I got lucky, and found a couple great items that I love.

Anchor Hocking Fire King mini-casserole dish

First up is this great little ovenware dish, from Anchor Hocking’s Fire King line. It cost me $1. I believe this is the swirl pattern, but I’m not an expert. That’s just what I got after a few minutes of googling. When I spotted it on the shelf, I didn’t even realize it was a Fire King (the price sticker was covering the label on the bottom). I just thought it looked nice!

Heller melamine tray, 13 inches

This is probably my favorite find from thrifting, ever! It’s a Heller 13 inch melamine tray in bright yellow. $1! What a steal. I’m not sure if this is actually vintage, as it seems that Heller is still making dishware to this day, and there are no dates on the bottom. But, even the modern product is not cheap, so it’s a deal either way. Fortunately for me, yellow is my favorite color. This thing is gorgeous!

I’m definitely feeling that sense of pride over getting a beautiful item for dirt cheap. It’s not helping my thrifting addiction problem, if I’m honest. I guess the only solution is to admit defeat and revel in my addiction as much as humanly possible. Shucks.

Slight improvements in my bedroom

Kurt Halsey postcard

Today, I made a couple slight improvements to my bedroom. I hung up one of my Kurt Halsey postcard prints and set up a new dresser from Ikea.

My bedroom is the slowest of all the rooms in my apartment to have improvements made to it, mostly because I don’t spend much time there, so it’s never very high up on the to-do list. But the new dresser was a necessity (my closet was way too full), so while I was making changes anyway, I decided a new piece of art would help things very much.

Of course, there’s still that big, glaring empty space above the bed that I don’t know what to do with. (I can’t seem to jive with hanging things above my head because of a fear they will fall on me while I sleep. This may have something to do with the fact that my parents hung a poster behind glass above my bed when I was 5 years old, and it fell and broke! Fortunately, I wasn’t there when it happened, but I think I’ve become convinced that anything hanging above my head will fall down on me.)

The dresser, at least, looks good, although I have a laundry list of complaints. 1, the plastic panels let you see the clothes inside the drawers way too clearly, 2, the handles are kinda bleh, 3, my cats like it on top of the dresser way too much! Well, that last one isn’t really the dresser’s fault. As for the other things, I’m thinking of putting in some sort of insert into the drawers behind the plastic panels. I googled around and saw some people put fabric or patterned paper behind it, but I think it has a tendency to look busy, since the plastic has ridging on it. Not sure what I’ll do.

As for the handles, I’m already scheming to replace them with something either colorful (like these) or something vintage-looking (like these). I’m leaning towards the second one.

I’ve had blogs off and on through most of my adult life, and it seems I’ve been bit by the blog bug again. These days I’m into things like knitting, design (on a very amateur basis), experiencing different foods, crafting, diy, and similar types of things, and that’s most of what you’ll find here.
